Stay-in-School Programme

Our Stay-in-School Programme was piloted in 2006 in St. Margaret’s Park and Carton Estate in Ballymun. The aims of this innovative Programme are to:

  • Encourage and maintain high attendance in school
  • Support families in the transition from primary to secondary level
  • Completion of Junior and Leaving Certificate

The ;young people are rewarded according to attendance which is monitored by the Exchange House Youth Workers and are recognised and awarded for educational achievements. Rewards include day trips during weekends and school holidays which are fun based activities. Participation in these trips provides opportunities for young people to enhance their social skills and confidence. Exchange House Youth Workers provide a vital link between students and their families and local schools.

Exchange House hosts a National Educational Achievement Award annually. The Stay-in-School Programme in Ballymun currently has a 90% success rate among children engaged in it.

Since its success the programme has spread to Labre Park and Kylemore Grove Ballyfermot and St. Oliver’s Park and Bridgeview in Clondalkin. The programme is run by the youth workers in conjunction with the schools, parents and our After-Schools Programme. We are currently in the process of planning and piloting the programme to other schools in our catchment area.
